Perspectives in Human Growth Development and Maturation Book Description :
One morning in 1969, out of the blue, I received a letter which both distressed and astonished me. It was from a Prof. S. R. Das in Calcutta, who requested me to accept, for eventual analysis, a mountain of anthropometric data he had accumulated, as he was ill and did not expect to survive to analyse it himself. The data provided the astonishment; twenty-two anthropometric characters recorded every six months or a year, over a period of 14 years, in a mixed longitudinal study of some 560 children, aged six months to twenty years. Most were in families with siblings also in the study, and every child was measured every time by S. R. Das himself. The archive was unique, combining the personal anthropometry of R. H. Whitehouse in the Harpenden Growth St...

Perspectives in Human Biology Book Description :
This volume takes its subtitle from the theme of the ASHB meeting for 1995 “Humans in the Australasian Region”. Papers from the conference include a philosophical discussion of the ‘Great Ape Project’ by Colin Groves, and ‘An Osteological study of Holocene Biological Evolution of the Malay Peninsula Aborigines’ by David Bulbeck. In the short communications section, Colin Groves considers the hominid and faunal material of the Australia-New Guinea region which may explain the failure of Homo erectus to colonize Australia. Additional papers are from Peter Lisowski who provides a historical and contemporary overview of health care in China, Lincoln Schmitt who discusses the interpretation of DNA variation in the legal setting, and Charles Ox...

Trends in Dermatoglyphic Research Book Description :
The preparation of a volume of worldwide research contributions can be a time consuming task which is frequently more difficult than many other types of book. This particular venture was made easier by the assistance of many people. Therefore, we wish to acknowledge: the suggestions, academic support and direction of Dr. Kenneth M. Weiss, our American editor; the assistance of the staff of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Northern Iowa, particularly the generous and congenial efforts of Ms. Rosemarie Skaine and Mrs. Heidi Anderegg whose computer and deciphering skills may be legendary; the kind responses to our long-distance questions from Mr. Martin Scrivener of Kluwer Publications are much appreciated; finally, the ...

Archaeology of Pacific Oceania Book Description :
This book integrates a region-wide chronological narrative of the archaeology of Pacific Oceania. How and why did this vast sea of islands, covering nearly one-third of the world’s surface, come to be inhabited over the last several millennia, transcending significant change in ecology, demography, and society? What can any or all of the thousands of islands offer as ideal model systems toward comprehending globally significant issues of human-environment relations and coping with changing circumstances of natural and cultural history? A new synthesis of Pacific Oceanic archaeology addresses these questions, based largely on the author’s investigations throughout the diverse region....
